Join Jewish Columbus and their Senior Shlicha, Michal Avera Samuel, as she brings a part of the Ethiopian-Israeli heritage to Columbus. Sigd is a holiday celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish community that focuses on accepting the Torah and yearning for Israel and the Temple.   This event is in collaboration with Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services (ETSS) and local community Ethiopian members, and features the inspiring story of Efraim Zion Lawi, the first Israeli-born Qes (an Ethiopian Cohen or Rabbi).

Sigd – Holiday of Ethiopian Israeli Jews

Sigd is a holiday of the Ethiopian Jewish community, known as “Beta Israel”. The Holiday occurs 50 days after Yom Kippur. The name of the holiday is derived from the Hebrew word for prostration, “sgida”(worship).

Sigd begins on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 and ends at nightfall on Thursday, November 4, 2021.

  1. Remember the receiving of the Torah & strengthening the relationship of the Jews with the Torah.
  2. Renewing the Covenant with God as they did in the days of Ezra.
  3. Encouraging the community to preserve Jewish identity.
  4. Fasting day of repentance and prayer.
  5. Creating unity in the community.
